Marvel has invaded every corner of our screens over the last several years, from the largest movie theater to the smallest tablet, including film, television, and, of course, video games. However, the latest addition to the Marvel universe is not the action-packed romp some may expect.

Earlier this month, Marvel’s Midnight Suns released on December 2nd much to the anticipation of comic and film fans. Unlike most superhero games, this outing is a tactical role-playing game (RPG) featuring characters from the Avengers, Runaways, X-Men, and supernatural beings from Midnight Sons. Developer Firaxis Games had substituted fast-paced action for a deep narrative, extensive customization, and freedom of player choice.

Midnight Suns is a RPG that allows you to build your own hero, dubbed Hunter, from a handful of base appearances and then use that creation to join a cast of famous heroes to take down antagonist Lilith and a whole cast of villains in a sweeping story overflowing with twists and turns. Throughout the tale, players will be afforded the ability to make choices that will alter the Hunter’s alignment from either dark or light.

Gameplay itself takes place in two sections, battle and exploration of a hub world. In the combat system, gamers take control of three Marvel superstars and are dealt a hand of playing cards representing moves. Cards are dealt at random and can be used to deal damage to an opponent. If the player decides to shoot rockets with Iron Man or mow down goons with Ghost Rider’s car then the turn will be switched to the opponent, allowing them to attack.

This opens up a great deal of opportunity for strategic planning, especially as markers indicate which hero the opponent will attack. Enemies can be knocked over edges, blown up with barrels, and even shunted into portals allowing for quick ways of dispatching adversaries. While this method of play is both amusing and addictive, those seeking more direct and immediate control of their super-powered, spandex-wearing combatant will undoubtedly be disappointed.

The second form of gameplay comes in the form of the Abbey, the focal point of conversations and exploration outside of battles. The Abbey is not only the home of the Midnight Suns, but it is also the player’s playground in which to explore and grow the team’s relationships. Gamers must choose their words wisely as they build friendships with their comrades, even going as far as joining them in hobbies like fishing and birdwatching. This form of gameplay helps unfold the story and provide a in-depth look of the character’s behind the mask.

Conclusion

Marvel’s Midnight Sun’s is unlike other superhero games that have been released over the past few years. It utilizes tactical gaming to unravel a captivating narrative rather than straight action gameplay.
