Teen Central’s Trip to United Skates

By Amanda Moses

Spring Creek Teen Central (TC) boogied across the United Skates of America’s roller-skating rink in Long Island on July 28th!

Engulfed by the 1970s disco club ambiance, about 30 teens from middle school to high school were able to groove across a neon-lit skating rink with members of the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP), forming new friendships and fun experiences together.  This event allowed those who have never donned roller skates before to learn the retro sport in an inclusive atmosphere.  Some SYEP workers served as guides, holding member’s hands and linking arms as they skated. Others had the natural ability to majestically sashay around their counterparts, even performing spins as they danced. This was all coupled with the extra treat of unlimited pizza and lemonade for attendees!

“TC had so much fun! Skating brings the kid out of all of us,” Jahvonte Williams said, TC Recreational Specialist, “We should never forget to have fun!”

Upon returning to the Teen Central lounge in the Brooklyn Sports Club (BSC), TC staff hosted a surprise birthday party for teen member Genesis.
