Spring Creek Towers’ Media Club Tik Tok Challenge

The Spring Creek After School Program’s Media Club is taking their digital production classes by storm through the creation of short Tik Tok (a social media platform) music videos.

For months a group of fourth graders learned all about digital media and how to use lighting equipment, a green screen, and a DSLR camera through various activities. The students were also shown how to utilize their personal smartphones and iPads to create high quality photos and videos.

During their latest production, the class embarked in a Tik Tok Challenge to “Get sturdy,” which is the latest social media dance trend. Instructor, Lonai Mosely and Teaching Artist, Eileen Level transformed the lower level of the Brooklyn Sports Club into a music video shoot with gel filter lighting—which changes the colors of a light fixture—a smoke machine for a cool ambiance and a green screen for the backdrop.

One week the children practiced their choreography, and then began testing their studio setup for the final production. The children learned about video focal points and how to perform post film edits to include graphics and cut scenes together.

“I enjoyed this because I love dancing, and my favorite Tik Tok inspired me to dance in front of people,” nine-year-old Meila Bynum said, sharing how she thought the lesson was extremely cool and made her feel like she was on the set of a real music video.
