The after-school program, launched nationwide in October 2000, offers vital educational support and a comforting environment for students and their families. Serving over 9,000 communities nationwide, it focuses on skill development, inspires a love for learning, and enhances students’ confidence in their educational journeys. This initiative plays a crucial role in fostering academic growth and personal development outside of regular school hours.
At PS 346, program Director Randi Ray and her team facilitated a celebration for the program. Each year, they choose a theme, and this year was a tribute to Hispanic Heritage. Grades pre-k – 5th participated in a variety of engaging activities such as making paper plate maracas, paper bag pinata, pan flute, and rain sticks. All these instruments are used to promote joy and happiness. The students didn’t stop there; they were given Mexican ceramic bowls to decorate and show their individuality, creating a rich and diverse learning experience.
Spring Creek After Program shared with the Spring Creek Sun their mission statement, which stresses a need to invest in children’s after school education.
“Providing affordable, quality afterschool programs are the mission of the After School Alliance. In addition to advocating for increased investment in afterschool initiatives, it raises awareness about the importance of afterschool programs for children’s development. The Lights On Celebration is one of the organization’s events that highlights the positive impacts their programs have on families, communities, and students. Along with celebrating after-school programs, we have provided a space for families to connect with their children through STEAM, Arts and Crafts, and Positive Health activities,” Ray shared the Lights on Afterschool mission statement with the Spring Creek Sun.
“As an Educator, families who participate in Light On gain opportunities to bond with their children by participating in engaging and educational activities. These activities not only enhance children’s learning experiences but also allow parents to be part of their educational journey. Moreover, the program fosters a supportive community where families can connect with each other and share resources,” the rest of the statement read.
A parent of a 5th grader who attended told the Spring Creek Sun, “My son likes to participate in extracurricular activities, being with his friends and the staff members. As a parent, it’s great knowing they have these after-school programs.”
