Local Elected Officials Salute SCSP Volunteers

On June 14th, Spring Creek Senior Partners (SCSP) hosted their Annual Volunteer Recognition luncheon, honoring those who take their time to help others in need.
“Volunteers are those people who give no matter what, and they ask for nothing in return,” New York State Senator, Roxanne Persaud told the Spring Creek Sun during the event.
“There is no greater service in the world, then one who gives of themselves and asks for no material return,” New York City Council Member, Charles Barron told the Spring Creek Sun.

JASA Salutes Pride, Wellness, and Juneteenth

JASA Starrett Senior Center believes in providing their seniors with a well-rounded assortment of activities to participate in and to help keep their mind, body, and soul active. On June 14th, the senior center invited Nakisha Smith, a fitness instructor to hold a wellness workshop, while also commemorating Pride and Juneteenth with festive decorations and videos during their lunchtime

SCT Offers Free Health Screenings

On June 18th residents of Spring Creek Towers were able to have free health screenings at the Brooklyn Sports Club (BSC). The Heart to Heart Health Screenings were sponsored by the Starrett City Tenant Association, Weil Cornell Medical Center, and the Spring Creek Recreational Fund.

PS 346’s Lessons in Growing Their Own Vegetables

Students in Ms. O’Connor’s first grade class at PS 346 had lessons to teach them how to grow their own foods through an initiative called the Green Bronx Machine. This initiative’s mission is to cultivate student minds and engage them to understand how they can in urban communities grow their own food.

Scholars in Spring Creek Towers Achievements Commended

The lower level of the Brooklyn Sports Club’s (BSC) Aspen room was bustling with chatter as ex-cited parents and their teenage children prepared for a special scholarship award ceremony on August 11th. Balloons, purple tablecloths, and banners adorned the multipurpose room for an elegant dinner hosted by Starry internet provider to commend teens in Spring Creek Towers (SCT) for their steadfast dedication to academic excellence.

Twin Pines Management’s First Annual Softball Game

SCT Honors Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a nationwide campaign that aims to raise awareness about the impact of breast cancer. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) there are approximately 264,000 diagnosed cases of breast cancer in women and 2,400 in men. Among those, some 42,000 women and 500 men perish from this disease. There is no cure for cancer, so it is important for both men and women to have preventive screenings. In light of the severity of this disease, several organizations in Spring Creek Towers (SCT) will be hosting events to raise awareness and donations for breast cancer research.

Kelsey Billups Takes 1st Place at Morris Cup Tournament

Kelsey Billups is a six-year judoka who has a purple belt in the Starrett Judo Club and earned 1st place at the Morris Cup Tournament on Sunday, October 9th in Burnt Hills, New York. She was one of three members of the Starrett Judo Club (including her twin brother, JJ) that participated in the tournament. Unfortunately, the other two members did not get to compete because they were not feeling well.

Community Movie Night

The three schools (PS 346, IS 364, and FDA VIII) that are located within Spring Creek Towers (SCT) held a cross campus community Movie Night on Friday, October 7th. Tickets were purchased in advance through the school’s PTA and were $3 per person. Tickets were also available on the day of the movie for $5 per person. As a precaution because of the weather forecast, the movie was shown inside PS 346’s auditorium.

Students Share Their Thoughts on the Spring Creek After School Program

It’s the start of a new school year and students have been gearing up to catch up with their friends, make new ones, learn new things, and participate in a wide array of activities. At the Spring Creek After School Program, children in kindergarten to fifth grade were excited to begin learning with their group leaders while also taking part in STEAM projects, educational field trips, join student clubs, and more. For some, after school can be a time to receive homework help and for others it’s about interacting with other children and playing games.

The Spring Creel Towers’ (SCT) Community Health and Wellness Fair was held on October 15th outside of the Brooklyn Sports Club (BSC). Approximately 175 community members and residents took advantage of the fresh fall weather and stopped by to check it out.

Community Race/Walk Raises Money for Students in Need

On October 23rd, the Starrett City Judo Club, Legrosports and in conjunction with Operation Compassion, hosted a walk/run to help raise money to purchase tools for students in need. The race began promptly at 9am outside of the Brooklyn Sports Club’s basketball courts at 1540 Van Siclen Avenue, and continued all around the community through Pennsylvania Avenue.

Saving Lives with a Blood Drive at BSC

New York City is currently facing an emergency blood shortage, and the New York Blood Center is imploring all potential donors to share just an hour of their time to give blood, one pint can save up to three lives. That’s why the NYC Housing Authority (NYCHA), Brooklyn Sports Club (BSC), and Starrett City Tenant Association (SCTA), in conjunction with the New York Blood Center, have held numerous blood drives in the lower level of the BSC.

SELC Hosts Friendsgiving

The aroma of sweet potatoes, stuffing, and turkey emanated from the Starrett Early Learning Center’s (SELC) kitchen on November 22nd, as the master chefs prepared a delightful feast for the staff and students. The school’s Annual Friendsgiving is a much-anticipated tradition where everyone sits together to eat an early Thanksgiving lunch, and take turns sharing what they are grateful for.

Starrett Judo Club’s 2022 Invitational Tournament

On December 11th, the Starrett Judo Club hosted their Annual Holiday Invitational Tournament at the Brooklyn Sports Club’s (BSC) gymnasium, inviting a wide array of judokas to compete for the chance to win a gold, bronze, and/or silver medals. Helmed by Coach Parnel Legros, the event sought to provide an opportunity for young judo members to put their skills to the test.
