Dancing Queens and Kings at Frederick Douglass Academy VIII’s Prom

By Amanda Moses

Like the classic 1980s ABBA hit “Dancing Queen,” the young women of Frederick Douglass Academy (FDA) VIII made sure to live out the lyrics during their prom on June 17: “You can dance, you can jive. Having the time of your life. Ooh, see that girl, watch that scene. Digging the dancing queen”

Beneath the glow of a crystal chandelier, the students were able to let lose after a hard year preparing for high school. Held at the Roma View Catering in Howard Beach, the night was filled with all the beauty, glitz and glamour of a runway show except with a lot more dancing. The young gentleman wore fitted tuxes—some with bow ties others with rose corsages—while the young ladies looked like Queens with their tiaras, ruffled dresses, and diamond necklaces.
