Horror video game remakes have become somewhat of a trend over the last several years with titles such as Resident Evil, Resident Evil 2 and 3, receiving a flashy facelift, along with the ground up remake of the Last of Us Part One. This trend is set to continue in 2023 with the PlayStation 2 classic Silent Hill 2 tracking to get a staggering overhaul. However, before we return to the town that gave so many of us nightmares back in the early 2000’s, developer Motive Studio first took us into space with the remake of the 2008 classic Dead Space released on January 27th.

Story

Dead Space is an intense sci-fi survival horror game following Isaac Clarke, an engineer whose job was simply to repair a mining ship the USG Ishimura above the planet Aegis VII, but things took a turn for the macabre when he finds that everyone aboard was slaughtered. Utilizing his skills as an engineer, Clarke must search throughout the mining ship for his girlfriend, Nicole Brennan, who is missing while battling monstrous creature called Necromorphs (mutated human corpses.)  As Clarke makes his way through the ship in search of Nicole and the truth behind the outbreak, he must try to survive and maintain his sanity.

Gamplay

The remake stays true the original story of Dead Space while simultaneously including improvements to the visuals, audio and overall gameplay, creating a spectacular environment, remodeled levels, and more. Upon first loading Dead Space, there was a hiccup in which Clarke could not move forward because two characters had glitched together. But after restarting the game (luckily this occurred very early on) the game ran smoothly. Gamers are able to customize how they confront enemies by upgrading Clarke’s engineering tools allowing for on the fly improvisation to survive.

Conclusion

Dead Space stays true to its 15-year-old story, which is great for fans of the original title since some remakes seem to take away the sparks of joy that made the game a hit in the first place. With newly discoverable Easter Eggs, references to the Dead Space trilogy and lore, this title enhances the base tale even better than before.
