New York City Public School District 19 invited students from across the southeast corner of Brooklyn to compete in a STEM-lympics competition on May 21st at Van Siclen Community Middle School (VSC,) which is located at 800 Van Siclen Avenue.

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) is an academic discipline that focuses on collaborative problem-solving exercises for elementary and middle school students. It is said that this form of programming fosters teamwork as students work to investigate issues and develop constructive and evidence-based solutions. Members of Gate-way Intermediate School (IS) 364 as well as other local schools were invited to compete in the Sixth Annual STEM-lympics where they had the opportunity to take home trophies with projects they created together.

The students were asked to present demonstrations of structures that they each prepared in advance, such as Mouse Trap Cars, Bridge-Build, and the Tennis Ball Launch!
“I.S. 364 Gateway Intermediate school students used creativity, innovation, and technical knowledge to address real-world challenges critical to a skilled workforce and a successful life. Our students placed 2nd in the Mouse Trap Car Speed Challenge and 3rd place in the Mouse Trap Car Distance Competitions with a showing in the Bridge-Build Challenge. We are so proud of our student’s hard work and dedication throughout the year and would like to celebrate their successes,” Christina Joseph said, the Science/STEM & Special Education Teacher and NYJTL Educational Specialist at IS 364.
