Ready Player One!

It was an all-out extravaganza gathering worthy of an eSports event at the Brooklyn Sports Club (BSC) on January 27th thanks to a collaboration between the Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) Young Adults Program and The Opportunity Hub to host an all-out gaming tournament to help engage new and returning members.

The End of the Line Gaming Tournament invited adults ages 18 to 24 to test their might in partnership with Defend the North, the largest fighting game tournament runners in the tri-state area.  Approximately 43 participants showed up to play Tekken 8, Smash Bros., Mario Kart 7, Mortal Kombat 1, Street Fighter 6, and NBA 2K. Additionally, there was a virtual racing simulation of Premier Racing Academy.

“The DPS Young Adults Program First Annual Video Gaming Tournament was a great success, in terms of outreach to this and surrounding communities,” Co-Founder DPS Sergeant Charles Royster said. “New friends and supporters were made, as well as the creation of a new and wonderful community event that present and future members will look forward to for years to come. It just goes to show that even in times where people have become less actually social…a smile, a little bit of love, support, and belief can still bring people together.”

Each video game had its own tournament and battle ground throughout the lower level of the BSC with also a promise of fun rewards. The headliner game, Tekken 8 offered a grand prize of an Xbox One Console, two badges to Defend the North’s 2024 convention, and two gaming headsets.

Thank you so much for having me Saturday and me being a part of your program. I’m so grateful and honored,” Monique Weaver told the Young Adults Program via Instagram.

The first 100 participants were also treated to a free delicious meal from the Fusion East food truck, which was parked outside of the BSC’s community center.

The event took place from 2pm to 7pm.

“Thanks, and gratitude to all of the participants, vendors, and The Opportunity Hub for their support. On behalf of the DPS YAP, Eileen Level, and myself. We thank you,” Royster said.
