Fun with Spring Creek Towers’ Young Adult Program

By Amanda Moses

You have to see it to believe it, or as Naruto says, “Dattebayo!”

The magic of the Spring Creek Towers’ (SCT) Young Adult Program is taking the community by storm, one tournament, anime screening, and gaming event at a time.

Every Thursday at 7pm, young adults ages 18-21 meet in the Teen Central Lounge, located in the lower level of the Brooklyn Sports Club (BSC) and spend the evening laughing, listening to music, eating a variety of foods and simply socializing in a safe space.

The program was created in May 2021 and is sponsored by the Department of Public Safety.  It serves as a haven for young adults to interact with their peers, engage in recreational fun, access educational programming, and relax.

Helmed by Youth Officer, Charles Royster and assisted by Coordinator, Eileen Level, the Young Adult Program allows aged out Teen Central members to re-enter a familiar space while also providing  much needed resources for those who would like guidance for their future career path.

“We are very proud of the strides and progress that we have made in such a short time.  We realize that as a young adult, you too need a safe and comfortable space to gather with your peers and continue to connect with and serve your community,” Royster said.

Young adults are welcomed with open arms and invited to be themselves while also providing respite from the worries of the outside world in a place that holds no judgment and promotes creativity and fun. Royster and Level encourage members to volunteer in the community and help those in need.

Some events the group has held were: a nerf war, pillow fight tournament, hot chocolate/smores workshop, Super Mario Brothers gaming tournament, Spiderman No Way Home Screening, and they attended Anime NYC at the Jacob Javits Center. Royster and Level also try to introduce tastings like the Lunar New Year Chinese food banquet, a taco night, and other delicious delights.

The Young Adults Program is also working on setting up a trip to the movies to see the anime film Jujusue Kaisen.

Don’t hesitate to join! Every week there is something new and fun to try. Weekly activities include anime club, movie screenings, video gaming, mentorship, and access to lounge activities (such as the pool, ping pong, and chess), interview and resume writing workshops, furthering education sessions, with even more fun to come.
