Spring Creek Towers’ (SCT) residents are going to “Gobble Gobble” some delicious food this Thanksgiving, thanks to multiple turkey giveaways held as the Brooklyn Sports Club this past week.
Starting on Nov. 23rd, the Starrett City Tenant Association (SCTA) hosted a giveaway inside of the BSC’s lower level where Spring Creek Towers residents could pick between taking home a turkey or ham, as well as an assortment of fruits and vegetables to prepare their holiday meal.
For longtime residents like Susan Thompson, the SCTA’s giveaway affords her the opportunity to help her neighbors who are suffering from food insecurity but are unable to attend the event.
“It gives me the opportunity to give back. I’m going to take this turkey and the other food they gave us here and I’m going to give it to my neighbor,” Thompson admitted.
With grocery prices skyrocketing due to inflation, especially for meat products, purchasing a Thanksgiving meal has been a hardship on some families. Cheryl Kearse told the Spring Creek Sun that the SCTA’s distribution is the helping hand her family needed.
“It means a lot [to receive this turkey] because the prices are high in the supermarkets, and we can’t afford it. Around this time, we’d have everything except the turkey or the ham. When SCTA said they were giving it out it was a blessing. That is what it means to me. It was a blessing,” Kearse said.
On November 25th, Council Member Chris Banks made sure to give back to his district by distributing 300 turkeys inside of the BSC gymnasium corridor to those in need.
Banks believes that families should enjoy the holidays and not feel stressed or financially burden when it comes to buying food. He wanted to ensure his constituents had the opportunity to experience the festivities without worry about purchasing a turkey, so he partnered with the Wholesome Family Network Inc.
“Food insecurity is a major issue in the 42nd Council District and this is one of the ways we can, in a sense, make a dent in putting food on residents’ tables and also helping those folks in need,” Banks told the Spring Creek Sun. “I’m excited that we are able to help out.”
