Love, Never to Be Forgotten

By Melissa Billie Clark

When Detective Dee Dee Fields-Gagovitz hosted an engagement for 200 seniors last year, attendees requested that she replicate a Valentine’s Day party.

According to a 2024 AARP poll, 33% of older adults reported feeling lonely due to various factors, including the loss of a spouse, health issues, estranged family members, changing social status, and lack of transportation. Valentine’s Day, in particular, can remind many of lost loved ones, potentially leading to feelings of melancholy.

Detective Fields, a former resident of Starrett City, wanted to alleviate these feelings. She shared with the Spring Creek Sun, “I wanted to give back because I feel they do not get out enough, and there aren’t many events for seniors.”

Guests gathered at the Brooklyn Sports Club’s gym, located at 1540 Van Siclen Avenue, where Community Affairs Brooklyn Outreach team members greeted them. Detective Fields organized a memorable experience for the attendees alongside Captain Lorraine Perez and her team. The NYPD arranged a jazz band and played music from the 1950s, complemented by a DJ who played a mix of salsa music and popular hits. The seniors enjoyed food, drinks, cake, and a parting gift, all of which made them feel grateful.

Guest Esau Graham expressed appreciation, stating, “The NYPD supports senior citizens and hosts many events for us. I also want to thank Council Member Nikki Lucas, who always supports us and makes us feel special.”
