Dominican pride was on full display in Midtown Manhattan where thousands gathered to celebrate the 41st Annual National Dominican Day Parade on August 12th.
The festivities began on 37th Street and 6th Avenue where dignitaries and elected officials such as Governor Kathy Hochul, New York State Senator Chuck Schumer, New York Attorney General Letitia James and others joined the President of the Dominican Republic Luis Abinader—who for the first time in the event’s history served as a grand marshal—to cut a ribbon, officially marking the start of the parade.
The banging of bongos, the shaking of maracas, and the scratching of güiras filled the city streets where thousands proudly waved the Dominican flag over police barriers. Parade participants spun in circles with their skirts billowing around them, while others clapped their hands and shouted, “Que viva la República Dominicana” and the country’s motto: “Dios, patria, Libertad.”
The parade culminated on 57th Street and 6th Avenue at around 4 p.m.
