NYPD Community Affairs Provides Safety Information to Senior Residents

By Melissa Billie Clark

Crime can occur anywhere at any time, so it’s essential to be prepared. As we approach the holiday season, it’s inevitable that crime tends to increase. Community Affairs officers from the 75th Precinct visited JASA last week to share helpful tips and advice.

Those who live in high rise buildings, or multi-apartment dwellings, are especially vulnerable due to the constant influx of visitors coming to the buildings. Therefore, it is crucial not to open the door to anyone you do not recognize. Visitors should ring the doorbell, and residents, including delivery personnel, should confirm their identity before granting access.

If a resident gets a knock on the door, keeping the door closed is perfectly acceptable if you’re unsure about someone. Some individuals may target older adults by posing as delivery or utility workers or impersonating Spring Creek Towers staff. According to Officers from Community Affairs, a common tactic they’ve used is to claim, “A pipe broke down the block, and we need to check the water.” Once inside, they often distract their victims and steal valuables.

Here are some safety tips:

  • Do not open the door for anyone you do not know.
  • Request to see their identification through the peephole.
  • If they claim to be from Spring Creek Towers, call management to verify their identity at (718)240-4646.
  • Check the mirror in your hallway to determine who is approaching
  • If you feel unsafe in the elevator, make an excuse to get off to the next floor, such as saying you forgot something.

Be sure to stay safe this holiday season, and if you need assistance, contact our friends at the Department of Public Safety at (718)642-7550.
