OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

What is Breast Cancer Awareness Month?

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an international health campaign held every October, aimed at promoting screening and prevention of the disease that affects 2.3 million women worldwide.

Characterized by its iconic pink theme, the month features various campaigns and programs organized by breast cancer advocacy groups, local organizations, and major retailers. These initiatives focus on supporting those diagnosed with breast cancer, including individuals with metastatic breast cancer, while also educating the public about risk factors and the importance of regular screenings. Everyone – male/ women are encouraged to start screenings at age 40 or earlier, depending on their personal risk factors. Throughout October, specific dates are designated to raise awareness for particular groups within the breast cancer community, further highlighting the diverse experiences and needs of those affected by the disease. Fundraising efforts during this month also aim to advance breast cancer research, fostering hope for improved treatments and outcomes.

Things to do this Breast Cancer Awareness Month

If you know someone who is living with breast cancer or affected by the disease, take a moment to check in  and ask how they’re doing. It’s also great to schedule your annual mammogram and encourage your family and friends to do the same. Learn more about breast cancer and how it affects people’s lives from Breastcancer.org news, educational content, podcasts, and more. Breastcancer.org also hosts multiple virtual meetups each week to support people living with breast cancer and their caregivers.
