On Friday, May 27th PS 346 held their Virtual Career Day hosted by School Counselor, Robin Greene. All of students were allowed to participate. There were three different speakers, first was Atiba Edwards, who is Principal Edwards’ brother and is the Executive VP & COO of Brooklyn Children’s Museum. He oversees several different departments including; Finance, HR, Visitor Experience, and several other areas.
Students asked him several questions like; How do you take care of a museum? Edwards said, ”We have all of the supplies needed for all exhibits in case they break, I make sure that everything is working.”
The children also inquired as to what his favorite exhibit in the museum is and he told them that there is a World Brooklyn Exhibit that has miniature replicas of stores in Brooklyn. He encouraged the students to “Always do the best that you can to succeed in life.”
The Second speaker was Shateema Reedy. Reedy, is the mother of student, Shayla Jenkins. Reedy was born and raised in Brooklyn, and is a newly developed entrepreneur whose business, HYSC (Here’s Your Second Chance), is geared towards career development. Her business has surged through social media. Reedy has worked in career development and recruitment for non-profit organizations for ten years. She currently facilitates various orientations and trainings as a Training Technician for the United States Postal Service (USPS). Additionally, she serves as a cleric in her local ministry, a best-selling author, and is an advocate for Autism Awareness.
“ My passion is being a Training Technician, I enjoy talking to new hires about the various opportunities within the USPS. Her advice to the youngsters is, “ Do something that you are passionate about.”
The third and final speaker was El-Melek Moore. She is the mom of Prince Chad Moore and is a recording artist known on stage as EkkoSeven. She has toured overseas, recorded music videos, and performed on Soul Train.
Moore was born and raised in Brooklyn and Rap music and Hip-Hop culture shaped her world. After performing what Ekko deemed an “all too brief” stint as a lead member of a female quartet signed to the legendary Motown Records label, she perfected her song writing skills, contributing vocals to a list of artists’ projects that include: The L.O.X, The Lost Boyz, Al B. Sure, and Dru Hill in addition to touring with established acts singing background; most notably, SWV.
Ekko always noting the importance of education achieved her B.A. in Legal Studies and her MA in Museum Education Childhood 1-6 from Bank Street College of Education, where she developed an urban-based music curriculum to assist at-risk minority youth with building literacy and developing positive self-image. The students were excited to hear from a recording artist. Her advice to the students is, ”Find your passion, find what you like and make that your lifelong career.”
