NOVEMBER IS NATIONAL ALZHEIMER’S AWARENESS MONTH
Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia among Older People. It is characterized by a decline in recent memory – trouble using and comprehending words. Symptoms also include trouble recognizing familiar objects, trouble making complex coordinated movements as well as difficulty in completing basic activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing and toileting. Early diagnosis and initiation of medication is important, which has the potential to slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease and delay institutionalization.
Alzheimer’s disease not only affects people diagnosed with the disease, but also has a significant impact on caregivers. Persons with Alzheimer’s disease may benefit from attending adult day-care program, receiving a home health aide or taking part in support group.
For more information about where to go for a memory evaluation, latest research, caregiver educational programs and support group, please contact Alzheimer’s Foundation of America at 866-232-8484 or www.alzfdn.org.
