The Starrett Early Learning Center’s (SELC) students and staff honored females of color for Women’s History Month on March 25th with a hybrid event.
“Our children have worked really hard to get teachers to present this special program just for you,” SELC Director, Tammy Moore said at the beginning of the hybrid showcase.
The children in SELC’s 3K and 4K groups worked together in their classrooms while their teachers recorded the event virtually for families and friends to watch over Zoom. They sang songs, stated powerful adjectives that describe a woman’s strength, and discussed famous writers for their commemorative event. In addition, each class highlighted trailblazers who were freedom fighters, educators, politicians, doctors and more.
“We wanted to be able to capture and celebrate women as well as women of color. In particular, just highlighting the amazing work that women have done and are continuing to do in our world. Thank you, mothers,” Moore said, “I want to leave with this quote from Stephanie Williams and she says: ‘I believe that as women, it is time to show love towards our fellow sisters and to encourage and build up one another and not to tear each other down.’ Let’s build one another up. Let’s build. There’s so much going on in the world. Let’s continue to build each other up. Empower one another because our little girls, they’re watching us and they’re modeling after us, and they are learning from everything that we do.”
Moore ended the virtual presentation with positive affirmations, encouraging families listening on the call to be themselves, say that they are valuable and worthy. “And this women’s month I am enough,” Moore added.
