Teen Central’s Trip into Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn

By: Pamela Stern

On Thursday, August 1st,  eighteen Teen Central members (ages 14-18) took two trips, the first into Manhattan to visit The New School and the second was to play Beat the Bomb in downtown Brooklyn.

A chartered bus picked everyone up at 10:15am and took them to The New School on 12th Street in the city where the teens had a one-hour tour of the school. After the teens visited The New School, the bus took them into downtown Brooklyn  where they had made  a stop for lunch where they had pizza from the Little Pizza Parlor and then they were ready for their fun activity of playing Beat the Bomb, which is also located in downtown Brooklyn.

Beat the Bomb is a fun escape room like activity where the teens had a team building experience with a twist, where participants go through four rooms and face different objectives in each room and they have an allotted amount of time to get through each room and when they get to the last room, they suit up in a waterproof hazmat suit with a helmet with a face shield which will protect their clothing so if they don’t finish in time and the paint explosives erupt all over them.

Teen Central members were split into five teams and each team had Teen Central members, Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) members, Teen Central staff members, and staff from The Opportunity Hub Future Focus Department.

“It encouraged a ton of team work! One thing I really loved about it is that it required a lot of communication and team building.” Ethan Mease, SYEP

“Normally Teen Central staff does not participate in trip activities because we are focused on chaperoning but this time, we decided to have some fun and team up with them and instead of asking them to follow us we leaned on them for their leadership to get to our goal of BEATING THE BOMB! It was fun and this is the new way of doing trips with our members,” said Gavin Edey, Teen Central Site Coordinator.

The fun day concluded when the bus dropped everyone off back at Teen Central at 4:30pm.
