The Opportunity Hub Supports Winners of the Afterschool Programs

By Melissa Billie Clark

When we think of mentors, we often think of those who have impacted our lives, leaving us forever changed. Whether through valuable advice, support, or simply going above and beyond. The bond formed with these individuals stays with us for a lifetime.

On February 26th, the Partnership for After School Education (PASE) hosted its annual Award Benefit at the beautiful Cipriani on 42nd Street in Manhattan. This event celebrates those who exemplify excellence, outstanding service, and leadership in supporting the city’s youth. This year’s honorees included Brian Green from the East Harlem Tutorial Program, Dyalekt of Pockets Change, Amanda Aponte-Surillo from the Queens Public Library, Jermaine Ellis at the Hetrick-Martin Institute, Aidan Davis of Statement Arts, and the “Afterschool Champion” of the night, Fatima Shama from Bloomberg Philanthropies, a longtime friend of PASE.

A letter from the board read, “Tonight, we celebrate the transformative impact of afterschool programs and applaud the phenomenal afterschool educators who work with New York City’s young people to assure that all children have access to the opportunities they need to be successful in school, in work, and in life.”

The Opp Hub recognized the significance of attending the event, as the Teen Center and Young Adults Program share the same mission as the five honorees. In an interview with Spring Creek Sun, Kadeem Hendricks, the Assistant Director of Teen Central, shared his thoughts on the event.

“The event last Wednesday was truly incredible from the very beginning. I felt the positive atmosphere as I walked in with my colleagues. I appreciated how PASE took the time to acknowledge everyone’s successes, both in their lives and within the community, as well as their dedication to enhancing certain concepts that benefit the youth. This made me realize the importance of remaining committed to my work in youth development. You never know who might be watching from a distance, noticing how you inspire the younger generation to step into the new world. I believe I can inspire everyone by setting the example of being a positive figure no matter the obstacles in life and always emphasizing the importance of being yourself.”

This memorable evening powerfully reminded us of the invaluable influence mentors have on our lives and the essential role after-school programs play in shaping the futures of our youth.
