As the summer comes to a close, the Spring Creek Sun has rounded up a few highlights from the Tribeca Festival’s film and television showcases. This year’s festival consisted of 109 feature films from 127 filmmakers across 36 countries (93 of which were world premieres), including numerous directorial talks and other interactive discussions.
Good Half, directed by Robert Schwartzman, had its world premiere on June 8th at the OKX Theater at BMCC TPAC with the director and all-star cast, David Arquette, Nick Jonas, Britney Snow, and more gracing the red carpet. The film stars Jonas who plays a detached writer named Renn. The aloof writer begrudgingly returns to his hometown in Cleveland for his mother’s funeral. It is through this journey, that a dark comedy unfolds, displaying a dysfunctional family each with their own odd personalities that causes Renn to keep his distance.
The Adults, directed and written by Dustin Guy Defa, this film was the Tribeca Festival’s spotlight narrative and held its North American Premiere on June 13th at the SVA Theatre. Cast members Michael Cera, Hannah Gross, and Sophia Lillis were among the stars to attend the red carpet, discussing with reporters their experience filming as well as what drew them to their roles. This feature follows Eric (played by Cera) who is forced to change his short trip back home into an extended stay with his family, reuniting him with his sisters and unsavory past memories.
Just Jack & Will: Live Podcast Recording celebrated the 25th Anniversary of the hit comedy series Will & Grace on June 12th at the SVA Theatre. This event had fans of the LGBTQIA+ show in a frenzy as they were able to see their favorite cast reunite (actors Sean Hayes, Eric McCormack and Debra Messing) as they screened an episode of Will & Grace.
Storytellers: Lin-Manuel Miranda with Rosie Perez was a discussion series with these two Latin all-stars on June 13th at the OKX Theater at BMCC TPAC. During this segment, actress Rosie Perez, also known for her work as a dancer, choreographer and activist, moderator the chat with Miranda who is known for his accolades in Broadway, the music industry, and in Hollywood talked about the long road toward achieving his many awards and creating content that uplifts the Latin community through the arts.
If you are excited about Tribeca Festival next year, tickets are on sale for another great event entitled De Niro Con, which is a three-day commemoration of the iconic actor Robert De Niro in April 2024. There will be screenings, immersive experiences, and a host of conversations regarding De Niro’s lengthy and impressive body of work.
