New Yorkers began their Hispanic Heritage Month celebration with the 30th Mexican Day Parade on September 15th in the Flatiron NoMad district.
It was a fiesta to remember last weekend when thousands of revelers packed the sidewalks from 38th Street to 27th Street on Madison Avenue. Participants danced to cumbia while holding onto fresh churros, elote (corn on the cob), tamales, and more. Others climbed onto scaffolding to get a view of the parade marchers, many of whom donned traditional Mexican attire all in celebration of the country’s Independence Day.
The Mexican Independence Day is celebrated on September 16th, and it marks the start of Hispanic Heritage Month. It also honors Father Miguel Hidalgo y Castilla, a significant figure in history who rallied against the Spaniards hold onto Mexico with folkloric dance, religious paintings, and songs.
