Spring Creek Senior Partners (SCSP) brought seniors together at the Brooklyn Sports Club on Sept. 25 for a potluck celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month through food, culture and tradition.

Tables featured homemade dishes, including rice and beans, seasoned meats, vegetables, desserts and other family favorites. The gathering gave residents an opportunity to share their favorite foods and learn about the diverse cultural backgrounds represented throughout Spring Creek Towers.

Jasmine Jennings, a member of the Senior Partners team, said the event was created to recognize Hispanic residents who regularly participate in the organization’s programs and enjoy sharing their heritage with others.

“Senior Partners started the Hispanic Heritage Potluck because we have a small group of Hispanic adults who come to our programs all the time and love sharing their stories and culture with everyone,” Jennings said. “Honestly, you don’t have to be Hispanic to appreciate the culture.”

For attendee Gladys Collaz, the celebration was an opportunity to express pride in her Puerto Rican roots and the traditions that have shaped her identity. She highlighted the importance of family, food and caring for older generations.

“I’m so proud of our culture and I am so proud of how we take care of our family members especially our seniors,” Collaz said, praising Puerto Rican cuisine and the cultural traditions that bring loved ones together.

“Hispanic Heritage means everything to me. It’s family. It’s food. It’s togetherness. It’s celebrating our island of Puerto Rico,” she added.

The potluck highlighted SCSP’s efforts to create inclusive programs where seniors can share their experiences and celebrate their backgrounds.
