Brooklyn celebrated Michael Jackson’s birthday on Aug. 29 as filmmaker and longtime Jackson fan Spike Lee brought his “BK Loves MJ” event back to Fort Greene Park for an afternoon of music, dancing and tributes to the King of Pop.

The free celebration ran from noon to 7 p.m., with DJ Spinna spinning Jackson’s hits as fans gathered to honor the legendary performer. Presented in partnership with Jordan Brand, the event welcomed attendees of different generations to enjoy the music and celebrate Jackson’s lasting influence.

Lee, a Brooklyn native, has made “BK Loves MJ” a recurring tribute that brings fans together through their shared appreciation for the singer’s music and legacy.

Richard Williams, a Mill Basin resident, praised the gathering for bringing people together.

“That was a beautiful event. Just to get people together. All nationalities of people.” Williams said. “Michael Jackson was the man. I grew up idolizing him. I used to play drums, and I used to have Afro.”

For others, Jackson’s music continues to create personal memories across generations. Hassan Canaan, executive director of The Brooklyn Sports Club, shared how one of the singer’s songs has become special to his family.

“My favorite Michael Jackson song is ‘Rock With You,’ just because my daughter loves that song,” Canaan said. “She’s not even two years old and sings along to it. That’s the first song I’ve ever heard her sing, so right now that’s my favorite song.”

The celebration showcased Jackson’s enduring musical legacy while highlighting Brooklyn’s ability to bring communities together through art, culture, and shared experiences.
