Celebrating the African American Day Parade

By Amanda Moses

On September 15th, New Yorkers celebrated the 55th Annual African American Day Parade in Harlem.

With the theme “Power through unity,” this year’s parade highlighted leaders in politics and government by filing the streets with music, chants to go out and vote, and more. The parade began as a celebration of African American culture thanks to the Harlem Renaissance and continues to bring awareness to the Black community.

Marching from 111th Street and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard up to to 136th Street were grand marshals New York State Attorney Letitia James, Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgato, Speaker of the NYC Council Adrienne Adams, New York State Senator Cordell Cleare, Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson, New York City Council Member Yusef Salaam, and New York State Assembly Member Stefani Zinerman. Each of these elected officials were a representation of Black excellence in the community.

The African American Day Parade strived to honor black culture and unity through music, dance, and advocacy.
