A handful of fans won the chance to see Vietnamese American singer Thuy at iHeart Radio for an exclusive meet and greet interview/performance in Midtown Manhattan on Sept. 9.
Thuy has been taking the world by storm with her soulful music, even conquring the countdown stage for the VMAs in New York. Ahead of her performance, the R&B singer sat down with Crystal Rosas to talk about her rise to fame.
Thuy candidly shared that it’s been a surreal experience, in which she feels excited about her accomplishments and also surprised. However, as the 32-year-old songwriter becomes more seasoned in the industry, she has learned to be less shy and embrace her talent.
As the daughter of Vietnamese immigrant parents residing in San Francisco, California, her rise to fame has made her family extremely proud. With her mother even adding that they never thought it could have been a possibility to see the inside of a prestigious radio station like iHeart’s Midtown offices.
Thuy also made history by becoming the first Vietnamese soloist to be part of the Coachella line up. Upon learning the news of being able to perform at this festival, Thuy shared that she was overcome with emotion, feeling that breaking moment when she had risen as an artist to a whole new professional level.
“I looked at my team, and I started crying, because I was like we have come so far, and I’m so proud of all the hard work and all the time and energy, everything tears like wanting to give up multiple times and then to get on a festival like Coachella, which is like the Super Bowl of all music festivals, in my opinion, was definitely a moment where I really told myself I was proud of myself, which I don’t say a lot, so it was so fun. The whole experience was amazing,” Thuy told iHeart Radio.
After the interview, fans were treated to two songs “Girls like me don’t cry” and “Cloud 11,” followed by selfies with Thuy.
