Itadakimasu, which translates to “Let’s dig in!” served as the latest, fun-filled concept behind the Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) Young Adult Program (YAP) where members gathered to taste Japanese snacks in the lower level of the Brooklyn Sports Club (BSC) on April 20th.
As a jump start to celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month in May, YAP’s Co-Director, Eileen Level incorporated two aspects of Japanese culture: marketing for an Anime Con workshop and a mouth-watering taste test with members.
During spring break, Level visited Tokyo, Japan where she educated herself regarding traditional customs, culture, and customary food. With her students in mind, Level purchased snacks for YAP members to savor and, in turn, have them learn about the variety of store-bought offerings in Asia. For example, Japan’s love of the candy Kit-Kat goes to a whole new level thanks to a wide array of flavors—over 300 types—such as matcha, peach, strawberry, pudding, banana caramel, milk tea, chocolate orange, and more.
Fresh from her journey, Level handed out the delicious treats to members of the program while sharing her experience in the country. She also workshopped marketing ideas for an Anime convention—an event being coordinating by her film festival organization PaleFo Cinema at the Brooklyn Public Library this summer. Level invited YAP participants to design and develop this event, which is geared toward helping marginalized youth and young adults through their love of Japanese manga and anime.
As the group munched on the anime One Piece’s pork chips and other delights, the members brainstormed about the font, logo, and color for flyers that would drive the most attention of potential Anime Con attendees. Level also quizzed the youngsters what guests would enjoy the most in terms of free gifts, a swag bag, water bottle, or t-shirt.
YAP runs a year-round diverse and inclusive program for young adults ages 18 to 24 every week (Monday through Friday) from 7pm to 9pm in the lower level of the BSC. The group participates in field trips, hosts a variety of activities and challenges, and will run an exciting summer session this year.
