Forspoken Game Review

Game: Forspoken

Platform: PlayStation 5 and PC

Rating: M for Mature

Cost: $69.99

Forspoken is a new fantasy role playing game (RPG) that hit shelves on January 24th, and since its release it has gotten some mixed reviews. Luminous Productions’ narrative-focused action outing may seem like it has the making of every other Marvel-esque origin story, but when players delve deep into the tale it’s not as bland as critics state.

Story

This new fantasy venture follows a 21-year-old orphan, Frey Holland voiced by Ella Balinska, who is constantly mixed up in trouble. In fact, the very first scene sees Holland facing criminal charges in court, and she is given one last chance to turn her life around or face prison time. While Holland’s witty banter with those around her may seem a bit forced at times, as her story unfolds her personality is seen more than a grumpy angsty girl with a sarcastic retort to every remark. Holland has trodden a dark path to survive the nitty gritty streets of New York City, and in doing so owes some serious crime bosses.  As she tries to escape her dangerous and destitute life in the big apple, she comes across an armband (a large bracelet that she calls Cuff) and when she puts it on, she is flung into a mythical realm called Athia.  From the concrete jungle to a magical dragon infested land, Holland is thrust into becoming the hero she never wanted to be. The cuff she carelessly put onto her wrist has a telepathic connection with her, both allowing Holland to communicate with it as well as utilize its magical abilities. There is plenty of banter between Holland and her British voiced cuff, Jonathan Cake that can be at most times cringy, but overall unveils Holland’s background. It is through these newfound powers that Holland must aid the citizens of Cipal in the realm of Athia from an evil force, the Tantas.

Gamplay

Holland is able to explore the vast world of Athia, which spans forests, mountainous terrain, and an all-around fantastical atmosphere.  The graphics are stunning, especially the detail on the character’s faces and clothing. Whether it’s the shine to Holland’s lips, dirt on her clothes, or the lush lands of Athia, every intricate feature stands out.  While side quests can seem a bit monotonous, like aiding the citizens of Cipal to help gain points to upgrade powers, it’s still a fun experience as you uncover the history of this mysterious land. Additionally, jumping around and tossing spells at enemies can become tedious as times with the combat system four forms of elemental magic.

Conclusion

Forspoken may follow every other hero fantasy and Marvel Cinematic Universe trope in the beginning, but like other RPG games, once you’ve leveled-up your powers and familiarize yourself with Holland, the game becomes more interesting. The story seems slightly reminiscent to the Marvelous Ms. Marvel, who utilizes a bangle as her magical powers. But Holland is vastly different with deep complexities that players may enjoy.
