Eighteen-year-old Jayden Patrick is among the nation’s most elite scholars, having earned acceptance to Yale University, and he hails from Brooklyn.

The Spring Creek Towers (Starrett City) native is currently enrolled at a highly coveted Ivy League institution in New Haven, Connecticut. Patrick stood out among more than 57,000 applicants for his exceptional academics, extracurricular involvement, and personal drive.

Looking back at his admissions letter, Patrick recalls being in disbelief. Despite years of hard work inside and outside the classroom, Yale felt more like a dream than a destination.

“Sparks of shock ran through my entire head as I pondered whether my acceptance was a glitch or not,” Patrick said. “I excitedly jumped up and down while envisioning a future where I contribute to society through technology and programming.”

Patrick said Yale’s interdisciplinary approach played a major role in his decision.

“I chose Yale for its heavy emphasis on intersections between different academic fields,” he explained. “Not only could I pursue computer science, but I can also apply electrical engineering pathways to that technical journey while studying French as well.”

Last year, Patrick graduated from Science Technology and Research Early College High School. His college acceptances extended far beyond Yale, which offered him a full scholarship. He was also accepted to Cornell University, Hamilton College, the Watson School of Engineering and Applied Science at Binghamton University, Stony Brook University, SUNY Geneseo, and SUNY New Paltz.

“The biggest moment of 2025 was unironically when I was accepted into Yale,” Patrick said. “I knew my life was on a greater trajectory than the one I lived in Starrett City.”

Although he did not visit the campus before committing, Patrick trusted his instincts and knew Yale would be life-changing. His parents, he said, were unwavering in their support.

“They were always cheering me on calmly because they never once doubted my potential,” he shared.

Patrick says his first semester exceeded expectations. He joined Yale’s Bulldog Racing Club, where he contributes to the Aerodynamics subteam.

As a young teen, Patrick was an active member of Spring Creek Teen Central, where he learned the mechanics of basketball and formed a bond with the staff. Youth Development Coordinator Jahvonte Williams remembers watching Patrick grow on and off the court.

“I first met Jayden at Teen Central on the basketball court, just shooting around and playing. He had a haircut similar to Carlos Boozer’s son, who plays at Duke University, so I started calling him ‘Boozer’ as a nickname—and it stuck. What really stood out to me was his relaxed energy, especially for a kid growing up in East New York. Over time, I saw how Teen Central helped shape him into the person he is today. Seeing his academic success makes me proud because it shows what can happen when young people are given support, structure, and a place like Teen Central to grow. I hope Jayden’s story inspires other TC members to believe in themselves, stay focused on their goals, and understand that their hard work can open doors they may not even see yet,” Williams said.

For fellow members of Teen Central at Spring Creek Towers who aspire to attend selective, competitive colleges, Patrick emphasized the importance of preparation and resilience.

“My advice would be to genuinely mentally prepare to compete against the world in pursuing higher education and a career,” he said candidly. “The vast majority of people out there are not meant to be your friend.”

As for what’s next, Patrick’s future remains bright. He is majoring in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Yale and has clear goals beyond graduation.

“My future goal is to eventually be hired as a software engineer at a top tech company,” Patrick said, “while integrating better and more accessible language features into platforms and products.”
