SCT Honors Breast Cancer Awareness Month

By Amanda Moses

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a nationwide campaign that aims to raise awareness about the impact of breast cancer. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) there are approximately 264,000 diagnosed cases of breast cancer in women and 2,400 in men.  Among those, some 42,000 women and 500 men perish from this disease.  There is no cure for cancer, so it is important for both men and women to have preventive screenings. In light of the severity of this disease, several organizations in Spring Creek Towers (SCT) will be hosting events to raise awareness and donations for breast cancer research.

Students are making strides for breast cancer through bake sales and walks throughout the Spring Creek Towers community. Local children at Abe Stark Primary School (PS) 346, Frederick Douglass Academy (FDA) VIII and Gateway Intermediate School (IS) 364 will be holding walks at the end of October (FDA VIII students will march around their school on October 21st and IS 364 will walk around SCT community to the G-Section Lawn on October 28th.)

Members of Spring Creek Teen Central and the Spring Creek After School program will be conducting various activities to teach children the significance of preventive care and what medical ailments can increase the risk of breast cancer.

The Brooklyn Sports Club will be selling pink shirts and other merchandise for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and JASA Starrett Senior Center will also be hosting a walk on October 8th.
