The OppHub’s “Autumn Equinox” Was a Tranquil Celebration of Life and Nature
By JaJuan Morris-Guity
On Friday, Sept. 12, the Starrett City community came together at Spring Creek Towers Farm for an evening of wholesome fun and fellowship.
“Our Autumn Equinox celebration was such a joyful way to welcome the new season and bring our community together on the Farm,” Executive Director Nanda Prabhakar said. “Neighbors gathered to sip teas made with herbs grown right here in our garden, share refreshments prepared with our harvest, and try their hand at sewing pincushions in a creative, hands-on activity. The equinox is a moment of balance, and our event reflected that spirit, blending food, art, and fellowship in a space that truly honors our community. We loved seeing familiar faces from our Older Adult Garden Clubs, community volunteer days, and afterschool programs, who have been an essential part of the Farm from the beginning, as well as welcoming new friends and neighbors to our space. For us, the Farm is not only a place to grow fresh produce, but also a place to cultivate connection, creativity, and a sense of belonging.”
The celebration featured a variety of engaging activities, including:
- A tea ceremony with garden-grown herbs
- Festive food made with fresh produce
- Guided garden tours
- A fiber arts workshop offering creative, hands-on learning
- A book giveaway hosted by Brooklyn Book Bodega
Some of the activities to take place include a tea ceremony, festive food, farm tours and a Fiber Arts workshop.
Additionally, there was a book giveaway hosted by Brooklyn Book Bodega.
The turnout exceeded expectations, with community members of all ages participating in what became an evening filled with joy, positivity, and community engagement.
“I think the event met the purpose of bringing the community together in a space where they felt like it was their own,” event co-lead Maegan Snell said. “Our goal was to cultivate a space where people could engage in thoughtful activities that fostered a sense of belonging to not just the garden or the community or to TheOppHub but to everything.”
While autumn only comes around once a year, TheOppHub has discovered a winning formula for community members and plans to double down moving forward.
“It was wonderful to see the community come together at the Autumn Equinox on the Farm event,” Farm manager Jesse Miller said. “My staff and I work and educate with an incredible focus on the farm every day. When we get to sit back and see community members enjoy our green space in a reflective and creative environment, I feel proud of our work in a new way.”
