The Opp Hub’s Sorrel Competition Was Absolute Fierce

Group holding certificates at a celebration event.

On November 20, The Opp Hub’s arm department hosted their very own Sorrel Off competition led by Assistant Farm Manager Grace Walsh-Little and Farm Director Jesse Miller.

Originating in West Africa and making its way to the Caribbean during the Transatlantic Slave Trade, it evolved into a staple in various Caribbean countries such as Jamaica, Trinidad, Barbados and more especially during the holiday season.

The beloved beverage consists of red hibiscus calyces with ginger, cloves, cinnamon, and often rum. Homemade sorrel is a point of family pride with many households having their own recipe.

Farm volunteers and supporters came out to enjoy quality fellowship, light bites and indulge in some friendly competition. There were three contestants on-site who sought to bring out their own iterations of a Sorrel beverage.

There were three awards given out: ‘Most Creative Recipe’, ‘Best Overall Drink’ and ‘Best Tasting Presentation’, so there were no losers in this competition.

In addition, some of the other refreshments included pineapple, carrot cake, as well as homemade ginger beer, rugalach, and snacks made by Farm volunteers.

Throughout the event, the farm team presented a thoroughly crafted visual slideshow of their highlights this year.

For the remainder of the year, the Farm will be closed to the public. Feel free to reach out to The Opp Hub team for more information about when volunteering opportunities will resume.
