Celebrating the Holidays in Spring Creek Towers
By Amanda Moses and JaJuan Morris-Guity
The Spring Creek Towers community came together throughout December for a season filled with holiday cheer, hosting festive photo shoots, lively ugly sweater competitions, cheerful toy drives, and special celebrations for seniors. From twinkling decorations to shared laughter and generosity, the month reflected a true spirit of togetherness, spreading joy, strengthening friendships, and inspiring hope for a brighter new year.
The Opportunity Hub Hosted Their Annual Winter Family Memories Holiday Photoshoot
On Dec 13, The Opportunity Hub hosted their 3rd annual “Winter Family Memories” Photoshoot for the Spring Creek Towers community.

Hosted at the Brooklyn Sports Club gym and led by The Opp Hub’s Wellbeing Department, the event drew many residents who enjoyed meaningful fellowship and created lasting memories, captured in new photos courtesy of photographer Eduardo Acevedo Jr. of Eddi Cruz Photography LLC.
In addition to an exclusive photoshoot experience, attendees enjoyed several games on site, including Uno and dominoes, as well as a cozy hot chocolate bar and a variety of snacks courtesy of Starbucks. Additional event sponsors include Ponce Bank, City Fresh, and Brooklyn Sports Club.
“I think it’s pretty cool,” Spring Creek resident Natasha said. “Everything looks good. The gifts for the kids and games for the kids. Everything is nice. I think events like this are important, especially for the kids. I think it’s cool.”

Another highlight of the event was a special appearance from NYS Assemblymember Nikki Lucas, whose presence was warmly welcomed by attendees and staff.
To conclude the celebration, The Opportunity Hub distributed toys to children in the community. A vast majority of our donations were received from Conde Nast, New York Cares and Price Waterhouse Cooper. Overall, the event was met with positivity, and a warm embrace and organizers say it is expected to return next year.

The Opportunity Hub Hosted Their Holiday Staff Party

On Dec 12, The Opportunity Hub hosted its annual holiday staff party in celebration of the season.
Along with a generous lunch spread and community-oriented games, the team hosted an “outfit” contest featuring three categories: “Most Festive Sweater,” “Ugliest Sweater” and “Most Classic Sweater.”
Most staff members participated, with Suzette for Most Festive Sweater, Eileen taking home the title of Ugliest Sweater and Noelia earning Most Classic.
The menu included oxtails, rice & peas, candied yams, rasta pasta, mac and cheese, and other dishes.

Beyond the food and festivities, team members were invited to share what they were most grateful for and reflect on the organization as they looked ahead to the New Year. During that time, things became open, personal, vulnerable, and meaningful conversations among staff, offering a pause from the organization’s usual day-to-day work.
While this was the final team meeting for The Opp Hub team this year, it also served as a gratifying springboard for what’s to come in 2026.
JASA Starrett Senior Center’s Holiday Bash

On December 5, the JASA Starrett Senior Center welcomed the holiday season with a much-anticipated celebration held in the lower level of the Brooklyn Sports Club (BSC), bringing joy to dozens of older adults. The beloved annual event returned to the delight of attendees, many of whom expressed how meaningful it is to come together, socialize, and take part in programs filled with laughter and connection. The holiday party was a true reflection of that spirit.

The BSC’s Aspen Room was transformed into a winter wonderland, complete with festive décor and holiday-themed photo booth stations honoring Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, and Christmas. Seniors enjoyed a buffet-style lunch, sharing good food and conversation while a live DJ set the soundtrack for the afternoon with upbeat, feel-good tunes.
No JASA celebration would be complete without dancing, and the dance floor quickly came alive. Seniors swayed, clapped, and moved to salsa rhythms and disco favorites. In one especially heartwarming moment, a member—with the encouragement and support of her friends and family—rose from her wheelchair to dance along to the Cha Cha Slide. For many in attendance, it was a holiday wish fulfilled: an afternoon of pure joy, movement, and togetherness among friends.
