Among the many things to blossom in October: autumn leaves, brisk air, and trick-or-treaters, the Spring Creek Sun always makes it a priority to recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, 1 in 8 women in the United States will be diagnosed with Breast Cancer in her lifetime. This year alone, there will be an estimated 316,950 women and 2,800 men will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer.

The widespread, life-threatening condition is described as “a disease in which malignant cells form in the tissues of the breast. “

To assess the severity of an individual’s breast cancer and if it’s spread beyond the breast, the cancer is assigned as a stage at the point of diagnosis.

An effective measure to combat the disease is through an annual mammogram, which will enable one to defend themselves against a late-stage breast cancer diagnosis.

Characterized by its iconic pink theme, the month features various campaigns and programs organized by breast cancer advocacy groups, local organizations, and major retailers. Everyone – male/women are encouraged to start screenings at age 40 or earlier, depending on their personal risk factors. Throughout October, specific dates are designated to raise awareness for groups within the breast cancer community, further highlighting the diverse experiences and needs of those affected by the disease.

In honor of the theme for this month, Spring Creek’s ‘Senior Partners’ organization hosted their own workshop about the ever-so-relevant topic.

Brooklyn resident Faith Bludgen came in to speak with fellow senior residents about her personal journey with the fatal condition.

“I found out a different way. “My inner spirit told me that I have breast cancer,” said Bludgeon. “I had breast cancer twice.  I had it in 2012 and it returned in 2020.”

Bludgeon was very open about the severity of her experience. Since overcoming both episodes and reaching her fifth-year cancer free, she maintains a stance of optimism and pure faith and now advises others to do the same.

“Follow God’s instruction,” Bludgeon said. My advice to anyone is that your faith will take you through. Trust God.”

There are several fundraising efforts during this month that also aim to advance breast cancer research, fostering a rolodex of improved treatments and outcomes.

In addition to awareness, fundraising initiatives take center stage during the month, supporting groundbreaking research that paves the way for improved treatments, earlier detection methods, and ultimately, a cure.

The Spring Creek Sun is proud to stand with survivors, patients, caregivers, and advocates during this important time of reflection, support, and action.
