The Opp Hub’s Teen Central Squad Takes The Stephen & Betsy Corman AMC Harriman Outdoor Center

Eileen and TC have fun

Eleven members of the Young Adults Program (ages 18–26) spent June 12–14 exploring the outdoors during the program’s annual camping trip to the Stephen & Betsy Corman AMC Harriman Outdoor Center. Joined by 2 staff members, including Director of Teen and Young Adult Programs, Eileen Level and Teen Central Assistant Director Kadeem Hendricks, the weekend offered opportunities to build friendships, experience nature and take a break from city life.

The group traveled by bus, subway, Penn Station and New Jersey Transit before arriving at Harriman State Park. Throughout the weekend, participants enjoyed kayaking, hiking, swimming, bracelet making, tabletop games, a Knicks watch party and evenings around the campfire roasting s’mores beneath the stars. Color-changing fire packets that turned the campfire flames green and blue added a memorable highlight to the experience.

“The camping trip was a memorable experience that gave me the chance to step away from my daily routine and connect with both nature and the people around me,” Young Adult Member Kaia Lee said. “It reminded me how valuable it is to slow down, be present and build genuine connections”

Teen Central Assistant Director Kadeem Hendricks said the annual trip provides a meaningful opportunity for both staff and participants to disconnect from everyday routines while strengthening relationships.

“The chance to unwind while connecting with nature is always amazing,” Hendricks said. “I enjoy seeing our members connect with one another, meeting new people and creating lasting memories. I can’t wait for next year.”

The annual camping trip, established in 2024, is made possible through the Appalachian Mountain Club Youth Camping Grant. Organizers said the experience encourages young adults to explore new environments, strengthen friendships, and reconnect with nature. This year’s trip also welcomed two new members to the program, reflecting the strong sense of community fostered throughout the weekend.
