The Opp Hub Young Adult member Voshon Thomas recently took time away from his neighborhood of Spring Creek to embark on an international journey to Tokyo, Japan. A longtime Spring Creek resident, Thomas was inspired to travel by his deep admiration for Anime culture and felt compelled to immerse himself in a place that had brought him years of enjoyment and inspiration.

“When I got off the train with my suitcase and found myself in the heart of Shinjuku, it felt like a dream come true,” Thomas told Spring Creek Sun. “Exploration was running through my mind. I couldn’t wait to start exploring this very beautiful and very lively city.”

As he navigated Tokyo, Thomas was struck by the country’s sense of order and respect for shared spaces, particularly within its public transportation system.

“The moment Japan really amazed me was when I was taking the train and saw everyone following a system that made moving through the station so easy,” he said. “Their escalator etiquette is amazing. The Japanese leave the right side open for people to walk up.”

The trip became a meaningful cultural exchange for Thomas, allowing him to bridge the gap between what he had imagined and what he experienced firsthand.

“Honestly, the biggest difference for me is that Japan has this rule where you can’t eat and walk,” Thomas explained. “It sounds small, but many places won’t even let you leave with food because of it.”

In the end, the journey proved to be unforgettable, one that left a lasting impression and broadened his perspective.

“For anyone looking to travel overseas, do it,” Thomas encouraged. “Don’t wait on anyone to get your passport. Go experience life. Traveling may seem scary, but being scared means you’re alive. Learn some common phrases and do everything while you’re there, because you never know when you’ll get the chance to go back.”
