On January 18, TheOppHub partnered with Repair the World to host a farm-focused Volunteer Day in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The event brought community members together for hands-on service at TheOppHub community farm, honoring Dr. King’s legacy through collective action.

Repair the World is a nonprofit organization described on its website as “the Jewish Service Movement.” The organization connects Jewish young adults to service and learning rooted in Jewish values, addressing urgent needs such as food insecurity, housing, and education while fostering identity, community, and belonging.

“We see service as a really great tool to bridge divides and connect to other people,” said Yonah Bernstein, Senior Program Associate at Repair the World. “It’s not just about showing up to do a good deed—it’s also about learning, bolstering education, and most importantly, connecting people on a local level.”

Over the course of two sessions held on Sunday afternoon, volunteers contributed to three major projects at the community farm. Participants painted 72 signs for farm beds, broke down cardboard in preparation for mulching, and helped build vegetable packing and washing tables. The day concluded with a sense of accomplishment and camaraderie among volunteers.

For some participants, volunteering is deeply rooted in personal and family tradition.

“We have a multi-generational family tradition of faith-based community organizing, social activism, and service,” said volunteer Heather Cousins. “We’ve passed it on to our children, and now that they’re adults, we can all do it together.”
