More than 120 runners, walkers and community members gathered June 13 for the inaugural Brooklyn Sports Club Community 5K, a neighborhood event promoting health, wellness and community connection in Starrett City.

Designed for participants of all ages and fitness levels, the event welcomed seasoned runners, first-time walkers, families, children and seniors. More than 15 volunteers helped create a supportive atmosphere where every participant was encouraged from the starting line to the finish.

Events Director Nina Ramirez said the goal was to create more than just a race.

“We saw an opportunity to create something that would bring people together in a meaningful way,” Ramirez said. “My hope was that this wouldn’t just be another event, but the beginning of a new community tradition. Seeing families, friends and neighbors support one another exceeds every expectation.”

Ramirez, an avid runner, said the event was inspired by her own passion for fitness and her desire to create opportunities for people from all walks of life to come together through movement and community.

As participants crossed the finish line, families celebrated together while volunteers and spectators cheered on runners and walkers of every age and ability, reinforcing the event’s focus on inclusion and neighborhood pride.

Brooklyn Sports Club plans to build on the success of the inaugural 5K with additional community wellness events throughout the year.

“There are so many ways for people to get involved,” Ramirez said. “Whether you participate, volunteer, sponsor an event or simply come out to cheer others on, everyone plays an important role. We’re looking forward to our Breast Cancer Awareness Walk in partnership with The Opportunity Hub and Spring Creek Towers this fall, and we’re also working to launch a Brooklyn Sports Club Run Club for runners and walkers of all levels.”

Organizers hope the Community 5K will become an annual tradition that continues to bring neighbors together while promoting healthy, active lifestyles.
